Tryng to control my Desktop from work using Remote Desktop. Unfortunatly we have a pretty strict firewall here.
Are there any ports that I can put remote desktop on that are almost guaranteed to be open here at work? I tried port 80 but that didn't connect. |

21 - FTP (probably not)
25 - SMTP 110 - POP3 143, 220 - IMAP 443 - HTTPS 3389 is the default remote desktop port. Generally, firewalls will not restrict outbound connections, so the problem is probably on your end at home. You may want to make sure you have that port forwarded to your internal IP in your router even if your computer is in the DMZ. Obviously, you should be trying to connect to the external IP from work. You also need to have Remote Desktop enabled in your system settings AND in your XP firewall settings. |

Ports aren't forwarded. Thought the DMZ was enough. Hopefully that's just my problem. Worked fine at home.

If they don't restrict outbound connections, how come I can't play EverQuest 2 or City of Villains at work.
World of Warcraft works fine though. |

Your network may block those ports since it is a school. I would still think that they single out certain ports to block rather than blocking all of them and only opening a few (outbound). You may want to try VNC and see if that works for you.

I forwarded the ports and it's still not working. I can ping my machine just fine.
Is there any type of scan I can do to see what ports are open? If port 3389 is blocked, am I screwed? |
